Promoting environmentally sustainable economic
development for the Evansville region is the mission of
Sustainable Evansville.
Environmentally sustainable economic development is a
process of collaborative stewardship of the environment
and the regional economy to provide a high quality of
life for present and future generations. In order for
economic development to be considered environmentally
sustainable, long-term consequences must be evaluated in
terms of impact on the public health and the
environment, impact on the economy, and equity for all
citizens. Economic development and environmental
protection must be seen as complementary rather than
antagonistic processes, both essential to maintain and
improve the quality of life of a community through the
generations to come. Environmentally sustainable
economic development is a process that equitably
capitalizes on opportunities to optimize land use,
maximize resource efficiency, minimize or utilize waste,
and improve overall quality and competitiveness of the
region.
Sustainable Evansville has established the following
goals:
- Teach citizens, elected officials, and public and
private organizations the advantages and opportunities
offered by environmentally sustainable economic
development.
- Catalyze the development of local, environmentally
sustainable industries that use regional waste as a
resource and create new jobs.
- Promote optimal use of energy, land, and raw
materials while reducing waste and pollution.
- Encourage protection and restoration of our natural
legacy for future generations.
