EcoHouse Energy Ratings are In

EcoHouse has been tested by Energy Rated Homes of Indiana, an initiative of the Indiana Department of Commerce.  After extensive on-site blower-door testing and detailed computer analysis, EcoHouse was awarded a 5 Star + rating, which is the highest possible rating.

Here are a few highlights of their report:

EcoHouse scored a 93.6 out of a possible 100 points.  (I hope all those student designers and builders got an A!)
Annual heating cost is projected to be $174.  (No, not per month, for the whole year!)
Annual cooling cost is projected to be $83.  (No, not per month, for the whole year!)
Annual hot water heating cost is projected to be $115.
Annual lights and appliances are projected to be $396.
Annual service charges are projected to be $64.

The average monthly total energy cost should be $69 for this 2300 square foot home.

EcoHouse uses 1/3 the energy of a new home built to Indiana 1992 Model Energy code.
EcoHouse uses 1/2 the energy of a new home built to EPA Energy Star minimum standards.

Compared to an "Energy Efficient Reference Home," EcoHouse will save 8300 pounds of carbon, 337 pounds of sulfur dioxide and 114 pounds of nitrogen from entering the Evansville area atmosphere every year.  If all the new homes built this year in Evansville were built to EcoHouse standards, 2076 tons of carbon, 84 tons of sulfur dioxide, and 28.5 tons of nitrogen oxide would be kept out of the atmosphere.
